My car has a knocking sound coming from under the bottom and my gas gauge is off. Could it be that I need a fuel pump? because it only does it when the car is sitting and running but when i pull off you don't hear it.

Your fuel gauge issue is most likely caused by a faulty fuel level sensor inside the fuel tank (check for fault codes in the PCM). The sensor can be replaced as part of the fuel pump module or separately. When the level sensor fails on higher mileage vehicles I usually recommend to replace the level sensor and fuel pump. That being said, a knocking sound is not usually related to a failing fuel pump. Most commonly a failing fuel pump can make a whining type noise. Does your knocking noise sound like it is coming from inside the fuel tank?
