Have a 2003 camry. Got stuck in the snow the other day and reved up the engine. After getting unstuck the engine started making a small tapping noise. Oil light came on. Stopped car looked at the oil and it was fine. Started the car and noise seemed to be gone. Drove for a while longer noise came back very loudly after being on the freeway. Was a loud knocking noise. A mechanic friend checked it out and drove it and as he drove it the noise went away. Now I have been driving it and today it started to make the noise again...turned car off for a few minutes started it again and the noise was gone. Has been running all day fine again with no noise. Very puzzeling...any ideas. Thanks.

Did you rev up the engine past redline? If so, you may have damaged something in the engine. I'm suspicious because you say the oil light came on. You need to get the oil pressure checked with a test gauge ASAP to prevent further damage to the engine. It's possible the oil pressure relief valve stuck from excessively high revs and that's not so hard to fix but if you have oil pressure problems from it you could ruin your engine so get it looked at right away.

Don’t drive it any more. You need the oil pressure tested ASAP before you destroy the motor. It could be as simple as a dented oil pan blocking the oil screen pick up. You will be buying a new motor if you continue to drive it. If you would like us to look at it just call me and schedule an appointment (313-562-7022). I am sure we can figure it out for you.
