When I apply brakes hard there is a knock which sounds like it is in the drive line. When I start driving from a stop I may also get the same sound. The sound comes from under the floor boards in the front. Also, sometimes when I turn the wheel to the left while in a parking lot I get a similar sound. A mechanic said it was the transfer case/drive line as I have "all wheel drive". Will you please comment? Thank you.

Start with the basics. Check out all your lower ball joints before you start to condemn a trans. There a lot of AWD vehicles that have ball joints that go bad.

you ever get an answer on the knock issue when you stop and go?

That is what it sounds like when you have a bad cv joint or the whole axle assembly. You can get a newly rebuilt one for $75 dollars from a parts store, but if you don't know how to install it, you can take it to a mechanic, and they will usually charge around $90 or so to fix it.
