The problem with your 2005 Saturn Ion is most likely with the shifter not the ignition lock. The key release switch on the shifter may be sticking. Make sure the button on the shifter is coming all the way out when you release it. You can also try a sharp blow to the top of the shift handle - that can cause the sticking switch to break loose. If you find out that the fault is with the shifter it may need to be replaced to correct the problem.
