The airbag control module can fail prematurely due to electrical noise beyond the tolerance it was designed for. As a result the front airbags, side airbags, and/or seatbelt pretensioners could deploy inadvertently while the vehicle is being operated, increasing the risk of personal injury and/or a crash. Dealers will replace the airbag control module and front and/or side impact sensors as required to correct this concern.
While operating the vehicle the driver may hit the ignition key with their knee, accidentally moving the key out of the run position. If this were to occur the engine would turn off, affecting various safety systems and increasing the risk of a crash and/or personal injury. As of this writing, the remedy for this recall is still under development.
The power brake booster in these vehicles uses vacuum developed by the engine to provide power assistance to the braking system. Certain vehicles are being recalled because the shell of the vacuum brake booster can corrode and allow water to get inside. The water inside could freeze and limit ability of the brake booster to provide brake assistance. This reduced braking ability can increase the risk of a crash. Dealers will test the brake booster and replace those that fail, and all vehicles will have a diverter shield installed on the brake booster to prevent this from occurring in the future.
Certain vehicles equipped with the Ready Alert Braking (RAB) System are being recalled because the brake pedal may feel harder that normal when the driver applies the brakes. As a result, the driver may not press the brake pedal as hard as necessary to achieve a normal distance. An increased stopping distance increases the risk of a crash. Dealers will update the ABS control module software to correct this concern.
Active head restraints are designed to move forward and upward as necessary in the event of a rear end collision. These vehicles are being recalled because an internal fault in the occupant restraint control module could cause the active head restraints not to function as expected, increasing the risk of injury. Dealers will reprogram the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) or replace the occupant restraint control module as necessary to correct this concern.
It has been determined the fuel tank in these vehicles is at risk of leakage during a rear end collision. To correct this concern dealers will inspect the rear of the vehicle and perform one of the following: A Chrysler designed tow hitch will be installed on vehicles not equipped with a tow hitch, provided the condition of the vehicles can support support proper installation. The tow hitch on vehicles already equipped will be inspected and replaced and/or repaired as necessary, again provided the vehicle is sound and can support proper instillation.
The airbag system contains various components which deploy to help protect vehicle occupants if a crash occurs. These vehicles are being recalled because the seatbelt pre-tensioners and/or side airbags may be slow to deploy when needed. Delayed deployment will increase the risk of personal injury. Dealers will update the airbag system software to correct this concern.
The power steering system and automatic transmission each have associated fluid lines. 2012 & 2013 Wrangler models equipped with both of these options are being recalled because a power steering fluid line can rub on one of the transmission oil cooler lines and wear a hole in the transmission line, causing a leak. Loss of transmission fluid can result in failure of the transmission to operate, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will replace the power steering return tube assembly to correct this concern.
The 4-wheel drive transfer case can direct engine power to the rear wheels only, all four wheels, or in its neutral position, non at all. These vehicles are being recalled because the transfer case can shift into its neutral position without warning. If this were to occur, engine power would not reach any of the drive wheels and the vehicle could not move under its own power. Dealers will reprogram the final drive controller which governs the transfer case to correct this concern.
The clockspring is a coil of wire located behind the steering wheel, it allows the steering wheel to turn and still maintain the electrical connection between the steering column and the rotating steering wheel. Certain right hand drive models are being recalled because the circuit inside the clockspring could break. This could result in illumination of the airbag warning light and/or no-deployment of the driver's front airbag in the event of a crash. Dealers will replace the clockspring and add a steering wheel dust shield to correct this concern.
