Japanese Auto Repair & Import Engine Sales
July 03, 2012

This business replaced my 1998 Subaru forester's engine in fall 2008. We opted for a used engine as they assured my family and I it was of good quality, from Japan, and with less than 30,000 miles on it. After they replaced the engine we went there for frequent oil changes as prescribed and followed all instructions but still had continual issues with oil leaks. Also, the car made a distinctly unhealthy noise occasionally after the engine replacement. I repeatedly went and complained about this abnormal noise and they assured me that every engine sounds different and that the noise was completely normal. About a month ago, the used engine threw a rod (we had known this was about to happen for several months and assumed that it was just bad luck with the used engine) and after searching for a used car, I finally decided to replace the engine in my forester, but this time with a new engine at a dealership. Today when they opened my car up at the Subaru dealership, the mechanic notified me that they had put the WRONG engine in my car. They had replaced my engine with a used 1996 forester engine, a different model with a different hydraulics system which is most likely why the car made that unhealthy noise, it was not made to run with this engine. Further more, there were extra parts on my original 1998 Subaru engine that did not get transferred over the the used engine when they replaced it due to the difference in modle. This company never notified me of these extra parts, so they either kept them or threw them away. I now will have to pay almost 2,000 more to get a new engine since I do not have these parts that normally would be transferred from the old engine. I feel completely ripped off and I would not recommend that anyone go here for any service unless they are a car expert and know all of the correct questions to ask. They are either completely incompetent and do not know what they are doing or they purposefully take advantage of you, either way it is unacceptable. I never thought to ask if they would be replacing my engine with one of the same year and modle and they clearly never disclosed that information even after I had problems with the new engine and issues with strange engine noise after the replacement. I also feel as though they have basically stolen from me since they took undamaged, perfectly good parts off of my old engine and did not use them on the used engine they installed and did not return them to me.
