A week ago I had front brake pads installed. Now, after driving 1 or 2 miles, there is a squealing sound when I apply the brake. Is this normal? For how long?

Did you have the rotors resurfaced? Proper pad wear is dependent upon a perfect or close to perfect mating surface on the rotor. Also did you apply a dab of ani-squeal to the back of the pads? Another scenario could be that you have some particles logged between the pads and the rotor

I'll ask the mechanic who did the work. Thanks.

Also ask if they used cheap semi-metallic pads or the better ceramic pads. Semi-metallic pads can build up lots of metal dust quickly especially when new. Also, this situation is amplified on a rotor that had become "glossy". For $20 each I always prefer to change the rotors as well.
