It has 40,000 miles (driven short distances only). Should I have a coolant flush performed although I am not having problems? Just because the last one performed was in 2002 (or so my dealership claims?) If it is needed, is it safe to get it done at a non-delaership shop? What kind of cooleant should I ask for?

Yes you can get your coolant flush at any shop, the shop performing the flush can tell by the color of the coolant as to which coolant to use. Go to Repairpals estimator and put in your info and under click on select service type click on the Scheduled Maintenance that is closest to your vehicles mileage and there you can choose what service you want and see the estimated prices for flushing the cooling system.
