Question: intermittent grinding/metallic noise under slight load engine area

Question

Visitor, Sheppard Afb, TX, August 13, 2010, 21:29

When first accelerating normally, an abrasive-scraping-chattering-grinding noise is heard. When selecting the a/c off, it becomes less frequent but still there. Pulleys, idler, belt & components appear good. Also, it idles slightly rough @ 400rpm when this occurs instead of 500-600 rpm. I know it's not the engine, but a component

Its hard to say without being able to hear the sound first hand. Start the engine open the hood and see if you can more closely pin point the noise. Get a friend to turn on and off the a/c as you listen up close in the engine compartment.See if there are signs of a lot of rust colored powder at the fan belt side of the a/c compressor could be a sign it is going out. If the belt/s were off you could rotate all the pulleys and see if any are starting to seize or feel rough.
