Question: Ignition switch malfunction

I have a 98 VW GTI VR6 that I just bought. Had it for a little over a month now with no issues. Today I tried to start the car and noticed that the door chime sounded even when the key was not in the ignition and the radio also had power. I depressed the clutch to activate the starter but when I turn the key.. Nothing happens. Battery is fully charged.
How much would it cost to replace the ignition switch ? Is it a job that can be done without removing the airbag ?

The part that was bad was the ignition switch and it cost 27.00 at the local autopart store. Didn't have to remove air bag. Found the removal of the steering colum was the easier way.
