ignition switch failure on 1998 Cadillac Catera

The dealer tells me that the anti-theft rod inside the steering column has to be replaced to fix ignition switch,
$700. Does that sound right?

dealers are always higher than the private sector.

shop around for a price before commiting. it sounds high.
