It has 114,000 miles, I have been told that this engine is the one cadillac designed to fail, while others said put in a heavy oil additive and it will keep on going? The noise quiets after the heavy oil additive. It does leak some, not much though. What is the truth about this engine? I feel like I might have the money pit. Will I have to ask for a government bailout to save this car, if and when? I have so much invested I hate to bail out now if it may not be necessary. Thank you!

Masterno engine is designed to fail. it last as long as you take care of it. change your oil at the correct intervals and change all other fluids as well. i have seen these engines last 300,000. if you dont take care of it, it wont take care of you.

I bought the care used with about 80K on it. I am on top even ahead on all fluids, changes etc. It clicks very loud, maybe airy? However with the additive it is not as loud. I have a friend who is the service manager for a cadillac dealer now for 28 years. He told me by listening to it, the codes and experience, I had less than 10K miles left????? The engine light stays on and even when reset it comes back on. He has given me the hopeless feeling about the engine. I dont' want to go to a dealer, I am sure I can only lose a fortune. Meanwhile I ride in fear everyday waiting for it to blow. I hope my friend never joins a crisis hotline! Any further thoughts? Thanks so much!Flag This -

Visitor, July 14, 2010, 12:55ReplyThe secret of keeping an all aluminum engine running is frequent oil changes and keeping it from overheating! This when most head gaskets fail. The Northstar engine will run ALMOST forever if you follow these two rules! Three hundred thousand miles should be attainable with a little common sense, a little luck and good maintenance.
