Question: I was driving and the shifter would only go into 5th gear.. why is that?

not sure what could be wrong with the shifter but need to know how to fix it..

    while you have the vehicle raised on a lift, have someone
    operate the gearshift. it could either be a shifter issue
    or it's inside the transmission.

    Is there a way that we can see if it is the shifter or not? We thought it was the shifter bushing that broke. but don't know how to get the shifter out. any ideas?
