I have had my mechanic replace the brake swwitch 3 times in 8 months.. on 2001 Lincoln Town Car

All is well for awhile ..then I start to have trouble pulling the shift out of park..I have to play around with it...within days I smell burning rubber and it wont come out of park at all. My mechanic asks me if I am driving with 2 feet?? I never do.. Please help.. Thank you Patty

Good morning Patty, If there a burning smell and the switch has had to be replaced three times I think there is probably going to be a bad connection at the switch. Too much resistance in that circuit (at the switch) causing the switch to burn out. I would guess that the switch connector will need to be replaced. I think there is a service bulletin that Ford published with the same symptoms and the repair was to replace the connector. We are a RepairPal "Top Shop" and we are located in Melbourne. Take a look at our profile and stop by or give us a call. I think you will be glad you did. Thanks and have a great day, Brin Assured Auto Works, Inc. 4451 Enterprise Court Suite N Melbourne, FL. 32934 321-610-7977

Agree with A.A.W., common problem! Also a service bulletin is not a recall so Ford dealer won't fix it as such, so less expense to go to an independent shop.

Thank you so much! I have read that another cause might be in the pedal. Is that possible too?

I think the connector will have to be replaced. We would be glad to set an appointment to look at it for you.

Is that the part called pigtail? If so that has also been replaced... so they just replace the brakeswitch.. Is there a possibility there could be a pedal problem..or maybe the gauge on the pigtail if thats what the connector is??
