You are right to be cautious and not damage any thing. Independent repair shops use either of two main sources of information to get wiring diagrams, service bulletins, repair procedures, specifications ect...
A company called Alldata allows private people that do some of their own repairs access to the same information we use for one vehicle/model and year specific for a very reasonable yearly fee.

I think they have a sample you can look at but you will like the vehicle specific information, repair procedures, wiring and vacuum diagrams and technical bulletins.
