The passenger airbag system on late model vehicles is designed to properly classify the type of passenger occupying the passenger seat. Possibilities include an adult, child, or child safety seat. These vehicles are being recalled because the passenger seat occupant may not be correctly classified by the airbag system. As a result the passenger airbag could deploy with a force inappropriate for the passenger seat occupant, increasing the risk of personal injury. Dealers will recalibrate the airbag system to correct this concern.

RepairPal Expert Overview:

The affected vehicles are being recalled because the brake light switch can fail prematurely, resulting in the loss of brake light operation. Other systems that may be affected include: cruise control, push-button start, gear shifter, and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system. Dealers will replace the brake light switch to correct this concern.

Hyundai found that a support bracket for the headliner could come loose when the side curtain airbags are deployed. In the event the side airbag is deployed, the bracket could come loose and cause injury to the occupants. Dealers will apply adhesive strips to the headliner to correct this concern.

During its installation at the factory, the panoramic sunroof assembly may have been weakened. As a result the sunroof glass may break unexpectedly while driving which could leak to personal injury and/or a vehicle crash. Dealers will inspect the integrity of the sunroof and replace the glass assembly as necessary to correct this concern.

The rear brakes on the 2012 Veloster contain certain components of the parking brake system. Moisture and road grime that collects on the rear brakes may cause the parking brake components to bind, and potentially fail to work properly. This is only affecting vehicles equipped with manual transmissions. If the parking brake is not fully engaged when parked, the vehicle may move unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash. Hyundai dealers will replace both rear brake calipers to correct this concern.

Hyundai is recalling certain 2007 through 2009 Santa Fe models because the air bag system may not properly detect a smaller occupant in the passenger seat. Improper detection may cause the front passenger airbag not to deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury to the front passenger. Hyundai is recalling certain 2012-2013 Sonata passenger cars, the side curtain airbags may inflate unexpectedly - Without a deployment command from the control module. Unexpected deployment would increase the risk of injury to vehicle occupants. It would also be a significant driver distraction and would limit the driver's visibility, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will replace the side curtain air bags to correct this concern. On certain vehicles, the center rear seat belt may incorporate a release mechanism that detaches both the lap and shoulder portion at the belt's lower anchor point. This design may not meet federal safety standards. If this seat belt is not properly anchored, it could increase the risk of personal injury in the event of a crash. Dealers will replace the center rear seat belts in vehicles currently in dealer inventory. It has yet to be decided if vehicles already delivered to customers will be recalled.
