How often should I change the oil? on 2002 Lexus ES300

I have been changing the oil every 3000 miles. People tell me this is not necessary for my 2002 Lexus ES300. I drive about 600 miles a month. I don't know whether my mechanic outs in synthetic or regular oil. The oil change costs about $40.

THAT IS SO TRUE!!! I've seen people goe 15k between oil changes 'because they use synthetic' not realizing it's still picking up and holding all the dirt and combustion by-products(simply put) that any kind of oil will hold and just keep on flushing it through the engine.Nothing beats clean oil and a good filter and I doubt any of us have seen an engine fail due to 'to many' oil changes.
