I have a whinning noise underneath when I acellerate or climb a hill. I just changed the front diffential gear oil after 1600 miles and found about a thumb nails worth of filings in the magnetic plug. How long till I am needing a tow truck?

I work on a lot of Subarus, just pulling the transmission out of my brother's 2002 MY Outback regularly serviced not abused front diff is gone out, trans bearings are expensive and I think are only available form Subaru.

Where would you take your Outback to have the front diff. repaired? Are the metal fileings from a bearing or a gear? The nearest Subaru dealer is about 60 mile from me. Removing and installing the front diff. seem to be the hardest part of the job.
