Power steering became hard to turn during a trip. Added power steeering fluid and steering was OK, made it home without more trouble. Went to GMC dealer and he replaced the rack & pinion module for $1700.00. Was this a good repair?

It's really hard to say. I can't verify the diagnosis that the entire rack needed replacement and not just the power steering pump, but you can probably check RepairPal for an estimate on the steering rack: http://repairpal.com/estimator

If the steering rack was leaking, then it would have needed to be replaced. To diagnose and replace a leaking steering rack, it should run around $1000-$1200.00, so unless they replaced some other items like the power steering hoses, they seem to have overcharged for this repair. There may be other factors here and without seeing the repair order so that we can compare what was actually done, this is based on preliminary information.

I do not know how much it cost for your rack and pinion part but I can buy one for my 2001 ford tarus for under $300.00 so that is $900.00 labor that you were charged. I believe I would be asking for some refund amount or take the mechanic to court to retrieve some of that cost back!!!!

It is about right since he replaced it with an OEM new part (I hope). For a rebuilt it should only cost about $250.00 and they are excellent quality.
