The gas gauge in my car always reads completely empty. The dealership told me it would be about 800 dollars. Is this accurate?

Call the parts dept at the dealer and ask the price of the sending unit, Our price at the dealer in California is $293.00 The time to replace the sender is approx 1.4 to 1.9 hours times your areas hourly rate. Try calling a Independent Land Rover repair facility and see what their opinion on the price is.

I had this same problem on my 99 D1. I ended up taking out the fuel pump assembly and found that the wire that went to the sending unit was broken off (faulty soldering). I simply dried off the assembly (don't want a fire!) and re-soldered the wire back on. Reinstalled the assembly and voila! my gauge now reads as it should! The dealership here was asking approx $400 for a new fuel pump assembly. easy fix for just about 30-45 minutes of my time (most spend on how to remove the pump itself!)
