ABS Light remains on the dashboard. What does it mean? Can the Anti-Lock Braking System be fixed on a 1997 Subaru Legacy Outback Wagon? How much does it cost in parts and labor? What are the possible reasons for the ABS Light to remain on on the dashboard?

Thank you for your answer with your advice. The mechanic I brought it to a few weeks ago asked me to bring back the car( which I will do next week) since he said that he had difficulty being able to access the codes by a probe so to please bring it back to him when he would be able to spend the time to obtain the code(s) from the car's computer, and then be able to advise me on what the code(s) are and how much it will cost to fix the car.I am in the NYC area and twice recently due to bad snow and ice storms, my son said that he almost had an accident twice due to not being able to control the car like he was able to do so in the past due to a non-working ABS system. In other words, I want to get it fixed ASAP for safety reasons.
I will let you know what code(s) the mechanic comes up with next week and then be able to get back to you to ask what is the reasonable cost of the repair(s).
    Thank you again.
