Question: How much ATF 4 does a 2002 Prius take when changing the Transmission Fluid?

The local dealership wants to charge me close to $300 for both a brake fluid change and changing the Transmission Fluid. I ascertained that the correct fluid type to use is ATF 4 (synthetic), but the mechanic was not around to tell the call taker how much fluid that particular model takes. I'd like to do the work myself to save the labor costs, but don't want to either underfill or overfill. Please advise.

    there are mandatory precautions you need to take to work on your hybrid. you are at high risk of an electrical shock without dis abling the system.
    delaers are always high. i would check around at independet shops for other bids which will be lower.
    we charge 119 for the trans and 79 for the brake flush.

    Hi Roy:

    Thanks for taking the time to respond. I've owned two Prius cars and I appreciate the high voltage warning and you are correct about the potential danger, however, my dad is a mechanic (aircraft, heavy equipment and standard duty and truck capacity), so I will have very careful guidance in this process. What I need to know is how much fluid to fill the tranny with. Do you have those specs? Thanks again, Calli's Mom.

    sorry, glad to hear you are familiar with this model.

    my book calls for 4 qts in the pan. i suggest putting in 3 and checking from there.

    You are awesome, thank you SO very much. I am always careful, my father is more-so, we will be certain to be mindful of those orange colored markers that indicate high voltage on Prius models.
