The devise inside the car does not open the rear lid and I would like to use my trunk for graceries, etc. I've read that it could be a cable, etec. and I really don't want to fix the stupid thing or have to take it in to a dealer (stealer). Can I just by pass all that and open it manually??:"?

Are there instructions in your owners manual? Check here http://repairpal.com/automobile-owners-manuals-online or try this link you may be able to down load a free copy of the owner's manual for your vehicle http://www.autousermanual.com/

Thank you for the advice however I tried that. The owners manual says that you can move the volkswagon emblem and that under that is a key slot for opening the rear lid. I have tried every which way to move that up, down, sideways, etc. and it does not move. I do not think there is anything under that to be able to open the trunk.

Unfortunately, mine is the same way, it will click, but will not pop open. It seems you will need two people, one to open the latch and the other to lift when you pull the cable or hit the button (04 - Beetle). Looks like the problem is with the plastic latch getting caught on the rubber flap. I will be applying some grease on mine to see if that helps.
