Question: How do you know if the problem with starting is the fuel pump or fuel filter?

Rookie

My vehicle has fuel, will crank but not start. I hear the fuel pump kick in when I turn the key. Had the battery checked and ruled out. Is it the fuel filter or fuel pump?

check your fuel pressure if they are good and strong, then check if you have spark.

How and where do you check the fuel pressure?

On your 4.3L engine, the fuel pressure check valve is on the fuel rail...fuel pressure should be 56-66psi when powered up...most likely it will be a failed fuel pump because that is a common GM Truck issue. When changing fuel pump, fuel filter replacement is recommended.

SEE IF IGNITION FIRE IS PRESENT FIRST, THEN CHECK FUEL PRESSURE WITH A FUEL PRESS. TEST GAUGE.
TEST PORT IS ON THE FUEL LINE LEFT REAR OF ENGINE. PRESSURE SHOULD HOLD AFTER KEY IS TURNED OFF.
IF NOT COULD BE FUEL SPIDER PROBLEM. PRESSURE NEEDS TO BE AT LEAST 50 PSI TO START THE ENGINE.
