At first the car would'nt go into park so I had to put it in neutral to start it. Now it won't go into reverse. I still have to put it in neutral to start. This sounds like it needs a gear selector adjustment to me. How do I do this or is this a different kind of problem?

Well there is an adjustment at the steering column to properly line up the shift indicator, given that the linkage is both adjusted and working properly. The tube that the shift lever is connected to in the steering column can break and cause the problem you have. Bent linkage at the transmission can cause similar problems. Bad motor or transmission mounts can also cause the linkage to end up out of position. Might try a transmission shop free or low price inspection, they should catch your problem right away, if it is linkage related. Good luck.
