I was told I had an exhaust leak and needed a new manifold. Is this a common problem for Honda Civic's?

Yes. They have a propensity to cracking. It probably has an audible exhaust leak that makes the engine run a little rough. The air entering the exhaust stream can manipulate the oxygen sensor readings and cause a trouble code with check engine light on and driveability symptoms. Use a shop you can trust and keep using them. They appreciate your loyalty as much as you appreciate their integrity. Make them earn your trust and then use them for all of your service & repair needs.
