The best way to check a starter is to measure the amount of amperage it is drawing to start.

A good battery and good cables should provide enough power to the starter. A solenoid that is faulty can be checked by checking for power to the starter when cranking.

    What symptom are you having?

Drove it home in evening, next day no start. when ignition engaged with key most lights on car turn off or blink. when ignition key returned to off or lock position all lights are normal.

I suspect battery issues and / or cabling issues (corrosion, loose) before condemning the starter. Check there first.
