How can I get my break lights to come on when I am using the breaks? on 1997 Jeep Cherokee

When I am using the breaks my break lights do not come on, we just bought this car and I am not familiar with it yet.

There is an actuation switch attached to the pedal assembly as well as fuses in the dashboard. i reccomend checking fuses first as this is the cheapest and most effective. the switch on the pedal is not to exspensive around $25-$35 depending. and the switch is relatively easy to change with minimal amount of tools. I do reccomend buying the repair manual for your vehicle it can be priceless at times.

I would check the bulbs first!

That was the first thing that came to mind, the only thing is both sides are not working as well as the light in the middle on top of the hatchback.
