Question: hot coolant temp

 Rookie

my van overheated tonite with a hot coolant temp msg. i added more coolant and it still does it. the are no signs of puddle leaks in front of my house or work. i noticed some orange coolant by the raditor cap. my van still doesnt smoke the fans come on when it overheats. Could it be the thermostat?? How much would this cost to repair

  Thermostat would be a good guess. My labor guide says its 2.5 hours labor to replace, $20 for t/stat, $18 for anti freeze.
