Honda Recalls 2003–2004 Vehicles Due to Defective Ignition Switch
Body, Interior & Misc., October 7, 2010

RepairPal Expert Overview

Honda is recalling 2003 Accord and Civic, and 2003–2004 Element models due to a defective interlock lever in the ignition switch. The lever may deform, which will defeat the interlock function on vehicles with an automatic transmission. This may cause a vehicle that has not been shifted into the "Park" position to roll away, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will remove the interlock pin and lever and replace them with new components, free of charge.

Since this recall, the starter has gone out in our Element: no problem before, so I find it kind of interesting now.

Since my 2003 Element (with only 44,000 miles) got the "FREE" recall repair on the interlock lever of the ignition switch, pins are wobbly and the key freezes in the tumbler and I have to wiggle the key more and more to start the car. It is obvious that the pins are now loose and about to fall out of the tumbler because the recall repair is just crap.

I had that replaced also and then the starter failed. Honda claimed the issues were not related. I then had a starter put in. They told me there were no original Honda starters available. The dealer put in an after hours starter. That one lasted afew weeks and died with a huge crash. I then took it back to the dealer. the dealer put in another starte. On my way to pick up my Element; the dealer called and said the starter failed again. WOW! The dealer then put inanother starter and again it crashed with in a few weeks! Crazy. I was furious to say the least. This Element has had every service done to it in cluding new tires and battery and brakes etc. The dealer then agreed to put in an original new Honda starter at no extra cost. Big of them.
