Early signs of a failing headgasket will be a rough running engine when you first start the vehicle after it has been sitting overnight. The rough running will generally last for only a 5-15 seconds.

If the head gasket needs replacement, the engine may be leaking oil, coolant, or both.

Failed head gaskets can produce a white, sweet-smelling smoke from the tail pipe.

Head gasket failures are often due to an engine overheating but can be caused by high mileage or age as well.

During this repair, the cylinder head(s) will need to be inspected and machined. It's possible after the inspection additional repairs may be needed. These services can add several hundred dollars to the repair and are not included in the RepairPal estimate.
