Having a problem with ignition switch. It is not engaging (It feels sloppy when on 1996 Mercury Sable

key is inserted), dash lights are on. Removed cylinder and put key in hole and car started then key would not turn it off. When replacing same cylinder it still would not start. Does anyone know if it is the cylinder (ignition) lock or something in the steering column.

It sounds like the piece the lock cylinder engages to rotate the ignition switch. Don't remember the name of it, but I have ran into the same issue, with being worn as well.

Thank you for your reply. How can I tell if its the cylinder or the switch though?

Experience is my ally. It gets very had to explain how and what when people don't have a clue about what you are trying to say. It's not always a plug and play situation, it's a mechanically operated system with gears and such.

Remove lock cylinder, look inside the cavity to see the lug that lock engages, turn it with a tool to see if switch turns as it should all the way to start then off. If it does replace the lock cylinder. You mmay need a locksmith to help you here!

Turns to the start position but not to off

Without checking it for myself, another 'guess' is the actuator rack inside the column. Have it checked out!
