turn the key, get a hard / loud click but starter motor does not engage. sounds like the old bad solenoid situation ?? dealer mechanic is saying there is an "open short" in the fuse box and needs to be replace to the tune of $600. service writer advices sees this a lot ?? common problem ??

While it is possible, that just don't sound right! I think you were closer with the solenoid. I say get another opinion! Check the pos. bat. cable to see if it still has double cables going to it, the older ones did and gave a lot of problems. Make sure cables are clean and tight. If you keep trying, will it crank? Can tap starter with hammer, while a helper turns key to start, to see if that makes it spin over, if it does replace the starter!!!!!
