I was on my way out when my car shut off on me at my house. Now in order foe me to get it started again i have to keep my foot on the gas even if i try to drive it. I've changed the spark plugs, ignition wires, and fuel filter, but i still have to press the gas to start and drive it, and it shakes and smokes as well.

2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Question: Hard time starting car
Answer #1Oakman December 24, 2009, 15:23Master
It sounds like your 2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo may be getting to much fuel in one or more cylinders. As you already know, replacing parts without properly diagnosing the problem does not get you very far. I would suggest as the next step to connect a fuel pressure gauge. Monitor the gauge for correct pressure and make sure the pressure holds for a reasonable amount of time after the engine is turned off. I sudden drop in fuel pressure after the engine is turned off could indicate a leaking fuel injector or pressure regulator. If the fuel pressure tests are all OK connection a scan tool to monitor engine data and checking for trouble codes would be a good next step.
