2009 Chevrolet Impala Q&A

2009 Chevrolet Impala Question: gear shift, locked

I drove the car that morning no problems. That same afternoon I cranked it but the gear would not move out of park. I did what the manual said, with the brakes but it didn't work. This is the first time the problem has occurred. -

My gear shift is stuck in park and the dealership says I need a new gear shift for a heavy price of course, is this necessary?
The automatic transmission shifter may fail, or a wire may break near the shifter causing the ignition key to become stuck in the ignition lock cylinder.
