Get a friend to operate the lever to release the fuel door lid, watch the little black plastic pin in the fuel door area and see if it operates. Most cars have a little plastic or spring metal device that keeps the door under tension to spring it open when the door release mechanism is operated. I know fro a Toyota Camry the part costs under $5 and takes a minute to put on. You probably have to bend back into shape the fuel filler lid or lock mechanism now after bending it to open.
