Gas Leak on 1998 Chevrolet Lumina

There is gas leaking from the top of the gas tank. The garage would like to pull the tank. The mechanic said he would not know if it is the fuel pump until the gas tank is off. He said the repair is $800 plus. The car has $170,000 miles on it. He said it is a lot of labor to remove the tank to see if this is the problem or something else. I need an opinion

Usually about 3 or 3.5 hours to R & R fuel tank and replace the pump. Depending on the labor rate $225-$300 labor would be my guess. The pump prices are all over the place. Call around some of the parts houses and dealers to get an idea. The leak could be as simple as a hose or the o'ring that the sending unit/pump assembly uses to seal the tank, or a emissions vent valve etc. Can't really tell until the tank is off probably. Hope this helps.
