when i first crank car gas guage shows correct amount of fuel after car runs a while gas guage goes to empty and light comes on

    I've heard the float in the tank for the fuel level sender (sensor) cracks and fills with gas causing the problem you describe. It may have enough air still to float to the top after sitting but sinks after you start driving. Some DIY-er's repair the float and some replace the fuel pump assembly (includes level sensor/float)... either way it requires dropping the gas tank. hope this helps
