Question: Funny sound

car has a high pitch whining sound coming from the engine that comes and goes while ideling. No effect on performance or starting.

    you probably have one of the bearings ready to fail in one
    of the belt tensioners or idler pulleys. this should be
    checked by a qualified BMW specialty shop; when the bearing
    fails, it will throw off your belts and the car cannot be driven. if this is the noise, replace both serpentine belts, both tensioners and the idler. expect about $550 and
    yes, this is very very common.
