I don't know how to clean my egr valve and i would like an overview of the fuel system so that I may track down anything that may be causing my problems.

What are your issues? What are the PCM codes?

The shop was telling me that it was "running lean" and that I'd have to replace the fuel distributer under teh intake manifold but, I pulled the plugs and they were blackened indicating a rich mixture causing me to question their opinion. for the $900 they wanted (and couldn't guarantee a fix) I figured I could track the fuel system and see what I could find myself. The truck runs really rough and gets a little better when I unplugged the egr valve but I dont exactly know what that's telling me.

Being told your engine was running lean and being told the EGR system has a problem would show the EGR pintle was held off its seat or the EGR was not being distributed to all cylinders both would cause different driveability problems. For vehicle year specific information and system over views Best source for information on test procedure and wiring diagram is Alldata but I just looked and it doesn't show where the ECU is. The information is year make and model specific repair procedures, service bulletins, component locations, wiring diagrams ect.... Alldata is very easy to navigate http://bit.ly/AllData_Repair_Manuals_Online
