MasterThat is way to high. You can buy a complete assy. over the counter from Napa Auto Parts for about $300.00, part #P74804S. Labor should be no more than 3.5 hours, that includes fuel pressure test. Unless that shop is charging $150.00 an hour you need to take it to another shop. You do know you can get a low/high estimate of repair on this website. RepairPal estimate for my zip is $368 to $587. If you have anymore questions contact me at autoknowhow@gmail.com.

RookieThanks for your prompt response and information. Do you think installation of the fuel pump in a 1998 Mercury Mystique is so difficult that the labor would amount to the extra $540 quoted by the shop?

MasterNO. Find another shop. I did say the pump costs about $300 There still is 3.5 hours of labor. I can't imagine the labor rate there is more than $80.00 an hour. Ask the shop that is giving you an estimate what there labor rate is, than multiply that by 3.5.

RookieThanks again for your thoughts on the cost of a fuel pump - I received a low quote yesterday for $500 which includes labor and parts. That sounds much better than $840 from the first shop. You were a great help!

RookieAnonymous - two fuel pumps were installed at the factory in a 1998 Mystique - one about $100 less than the other. As luck would have it, I got the more expensive one built in 1998 rather than 1997. Still expensive but without replacing it ourselves, most repairs are. I just wanted to know what to expect.

...ting the engine when cold, stalling at idle, or hesitations during acceleration, it may be the idle air bypass valve. This valve helps the vehicle idle steady when the accelerator pedal is not pressed.
