That is way to high. You can buy a complete assy. over the counter from Napa Auto Parts for about $300.00, part #P74804S. Labor should be no more than 3.5 hours, that includes fuel pressure test. Unless that shop is charging $150.00 an hour you need to take it to another shop. You do know you can get a low/high estimate of repair on this website. RepairPal estimate for my zip is $368 to $587. Thanks for your prompt response and information. Do you think installation of the fuel pump in a 1998 Mercury Mystique is so difficult that the labor would amount to the extra $540 quoted by the shop?

NO. Find another shop. I did say the pump costs about $300 There still is 3.5 hours of labor. I can't imagine the labor rate there is more than $80.00 an hour. Ask the shop that is giving you an estimate what there labor rate is, than multiply that by 3.5.

Thanks again for your thoughts on the cost of a fuel pump - I received a low quote yesterday for $500 which includes labor and parts. That sounds much better than $840 from the first shop. You were a great help!

Anonymous - two fuel pumps were installed at the factory in a 1998 Mystique - one about $100 less than the other. As luck would have it, I got the more expensive one built in 1998 rather than 1997. Still expensive but without replacing it ourselves, most repairs are. I just wanted to know what to expect.
