It is common for the fuel level sensor in the fuel tank read the fuel level incorrectly. The sensor must be replaced to correct the condition. Our technicians recommend having the complete fuel pump module replaced on high mileage vehicles.

Fuel sensor seems to report accurate from full tank to just under half a tank. Then it starts going up towards full again as the tank further empties.

I also have the problem that you can't trust the fuel gauge - when it gets low, it will abruptly change to show full, then drop, then go back up again - it looks like you have a full tank when you're actually on empty! I've been stranded once, and it's been close a couple of times. I set the trip odometer to zero and always fill up, so when I get about 250 miles I fill up again. We had guessed it was the fuel level sensor or the fuel pump - it was good to find this to see that others had the same weird problem. I'll likely change the complete fuel pump module. I have also had a situation for the last couple of years where the car will not start on the first crank if it has sat for over 15 minutes - it always started right away. As time has gone on, it now can take even 3 cranks. I'm hoping changing the fuel pump will fix this also.
