1998 Chevrolet Venture Question: fuel gauge whack

There is a level sensor in your fuel tank, and this is a common complaint when they start to fail.

thats true mine is a 99 venture with 203,000 miles and ive ran out of gas twice becuz of it.

mine is doing it at 130,000 miles. But I know it needs gas due to having watched it go from full to 1/4 and then it pulls the 1/2 tank or more, fast! like it is going berserk. But a day later it starts dinging that the fuel is low.

THEIR IS A FEED WIRE FROM THE TOP OF YOUR FUEL TANK WHICH GOES TO A REAR FRAME CROSSMEMBER AHEAD OR IN FRONT OF THE TANK. FIND THE WIRE CONNECTOR WHICH IS MOUNTED TO THE CROSSMEMBER AND UNPLUG THEM. CLEAN ALL CONTACTS AND FIND THE GROUND AND REALLY CLEAN AND REPLACE ANY BAD LOOKING ELECTRIC FEEDS. CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN!!!! USUALLY THATS IT.

There are 2 possible fixes for this, the fed wire that runs from the tan k tot eh fuel gauge may be dirty or corroded and by disconnecting it and cleaning the problem will be fixed.
According to the engineers I spoke to at work, there is also a problem with the oriinal sensor being damaged by dirty gas. The new sensors are beter made and shouldn't have this problem any more, but they are about $175 for parts and 300-400 for installation.
