Could also be the float on the level sensor. They are foam, and tend to fall off with the age of the truck. Before you replace the whole sending unit, which is typically between 300-600 dollars, drop the tank and check the float. Its probably floating around the tank like mine was

could allso be the instriament panel itself if you pull it out and wiggle the wire connect up all kind of stuff will turn on and off
