The sensor in the gas tank may not be functioning properly to be able to determine how much gas is actually in the tank. Another possible cause could be the cable that runs to the fuel gauge itself. Sometimes they become frayed and may not work properly. It's best to have a repair shop assess what the exact cause is though.
