fuel gauge on 2000 Mercury Sable

my fuel gauge is not working on my mercury sable ls. how can i fix this problem. some say it is a ball in the fuel tank or do i need to get the whole fuel tank

It may be the gauge itself or the sending unit, which is in the fuel tank attached to the fuel pump. The tank does not have to be replaced, but it does need to be removed to access the pump and sending unit. Have a shop diagnose the problem before tearing things apart yourself.
