You could have a wiring issue between the sending unit and the gauge. Is it showing totally full or totally empty? Is it pegged either way, or not quite?

It shows full for the first 200+ miles and then the gauge drops a couple of marks.....bell does go off when it is getting empty

Sounds like a sending unit issue. Not providing an accurate resistance reading. This is separate from the "float".
