2005 Mercedes-Benz E500 4MATIC Q&A

2005 Mercedes-Benz E500 4MATIC Question: Fuel Filter replacement

My dealer has recommended that the fuel filter in the tank be replaced. Is this necessary? I was under the impression that those filters are permanent. -

They are, more or less. There may be a reason they are recommending this but if it's just a routine thing I think I'd spend my money on something else. If you don't feel comfortable with the dealer, find an independent specialist to help you. Well, not exactly. A more complete explanation would note that on the E500 the fuel filter is an integral part of the fuel pump. So you don't just replace the filter. The part goes for around $200, depending on where you buy it. At an MB dealer, labor @ around $140/hr will bring this up to a price tag around $800 less whatever discounts you get from them. It's recommended by MB every 5 years; whether it's necessary after 5 years on a low-mileage car is another question. -
