can i replace just the shock part of the struts, or do i have to replace the spring also. if i can replace the shock only how hard is it to do myself? what would the cost be to have done by a mechanic?

    You can replace just the strut cartridge (shock portion) and reuse the spring. This is something I would not recommend doing your self unless you have a spring compressor. Without the compressor the spring can and will shoot off at very high speed and cause serious bodily damage not to mention damage a lot of things as it careens around your garage. Also the vehicle will need a front end alignment after the struts are done.
