Front Suspension on 1997 Dodge Intrepid

I have been told that my rack/pinion is going bad. I hear a knock when I make a hard left or right turn. There is a slight shake in my steering wheel. All tie rods (inner/outer), balljoints, sway bar link and struts are good. The auto shop said the knock is coming from the rack/pinion and it is also leaking. What are signs of a bad rack/pinion and how much to replace it?

ANSWER by on December 13, 2010 Use that directory to find a place to get a second opinion. The rack can be leaking very slowly, and may not need replaced immediately. Get a second opinion to see. The knock noise could be in the gear, but is also possibly a gear mount issue, steering shaft issue, or linkage issue.
